Word of the Week: Anchor

Word of the Week: Anchor

Definition:
Anchor (noun) – a person or thing that provides stability, security, or a firm foundation in times of uncertainty.
Anchor (verb) – to hold steady; to ground; to secure firmly in place.

When we hear the word anchor, we often picture a heavy piece of metal dropped into the ocean to keep a ship from drifting. It feels weighty. Solid. Strong.

But what if anchor is not about being stuck…
What if it is about being steady?

In a world that shifts quickly — busy schedules, endless notifications, emotional ups and downs — we all need something that keeps us from drifting too far off course.

An anchor can be:

I love thinking of anchor as an inner strength

An anchor does not stop the waves.
It simply keeps you grounded when they come.

  • A morning routine that begins your day with intention.

  • A quiet prayer or moment of gratitude.

  • A walk that clears your thoughts.

  • A person whose voice steadies your heart.

  • A belief that reminds you who you are.

An anchor does not stop the waves.
It simply keeps you grounded when they come.

Personally, I love thinking of anchor as an inner strength. That calm centre within you that whispers, “You are okay. Breathe. Stand firm.” It is the part of you that does not panic when life feels uncertain. It trusts. It holds.

Sometimes we search outside ourselves for stability — in approval, achievements, or perfectly planned days. But the most powerful anchor is often internal: your values, your faith, your resilience, your self-worth.

And here’s something beautiful — anchors are not only meant for us.
We can be anchors for others.

A steady presence.
A kind word.
A listening ear.
A reminder that storms pass.

This week, ask yourself:

  • What anchors me when life feels overwhelming?

  • Am I creating daily habits that ground me?

  • Who might need me to be an anchor for them?

Let this be a week of steady hearts and grounded steps.

You do not have to control the sea.
You only need to know what holds you firm.
